TJ full cage/windshield ?

I have a full cage, tied into the frame....

it also is connected to the windshield at the top (like the original roll bar). I've seen some jeeps with full cage that are not connected to the windshield.

Wondering if not having the it connected will cause windshield rattle with the top on or off and windshield up? It would be beneficial if windshield was down when wheelin and taking 4 extra bolts out is a PITA...but doable if needed...

any experience with this?

I dont have a problem on my yj, and I only have one bolt in either side of the windsheild. I dosent rattle at all even when going down the highway.

YJ's windshields don't have side bolts, they bolt on on the inside, like the CJ's, just that the holes don't line up perfectly, if I remember correctly.

He is talking about where the original cage attaches to the top of the windshield. I have seen them with or without but unsure of how it does without. I am hoping to not have to brace mine.

My windshield is not connected to the cage. It just has the one bolt on each hinge holding it. Its solid and doesn't rattle.

It shouldn't rattle at all. It is completely sitting on a rubber gasket. If it rattles... you have problems.

I have a full cage not attatched to windshield and have had no problems with windshield rattle.

rattlin'

OR Fab ties their A pillar cage into the top of the windshield with a tab coming off of the cage. If it bothered you check out the OR Fab and tack in a couple of tabs to support the top of the windshield off of your cage. There are probably other shops that do the same thing.

i have the or fab trail cage on my heep. the windshield tie in works great with my soft and hard tops and is super easy to disconnect to let the windshield down.

think of all those CJ that did not have roll bar connection, they only had the two hand bolts, they did not rattle.

Well, my friend also got the same problem (almost). What can you say about these weird rattling sounds?

If you have a cage going across right behind the windshield(you have a full cage so this should be the case), what if you take one or two of the footman's loop straps(used for holding the windshield down when you have it folded forward) and tie them around the footman loop on the top/middle of the windshield and around the rollcage? Just put a slight tension on it.

Just an idea

That's all I do to keep my windshield up. Just the strap, no bolts or anything else, and it works fine.

My Granddad runs his TJ with one bolt on the side hinges, it's perfectly fine. It doesn't rattle. Go beat your jeep.

thanks folks...took the bolts out...because my frickin driver's side door would not shut...guess my windshield got tweeked sometime...ah well...ended up having to jerry rig a spacer so my door could shut...only 3 bolts to take out to have windshield down!!!

I'd like to hear some thoughts on the safety of only running the side bolts and no top windshield bolts. I've read where a few people strongly discourage losing the cage to top of windshield bolts.

I had one guy tell me the windshield is actually (some %, maybe 15%) of your roll bar's strength...but then I have a full tied into the frame so that should be strong enough. Not sure if the strength thing is on a factory set up or not.

My reason for running without is purely from a standpoint that IF I want the windshield down when wheeling (to keep from smashing the crap out of it on a tree) then I won't have 6 bolts to take out, now I just have 3, should be 2 on the side but I've got to adjust windshield for the door to shut well.

seems like everyone here has no problems running with the windshield tied into the roll bar.

just my 2 cents...
