Gas tank have to go in the cargo area for stretch?
Is there any other option (besides lifting an XJ 2 feet) than putting the gas tank inside the Jeep when stretching the wheelbase? Does anyone know a max stretch distance while keeping the tank in its place?
Thanks for any input guys. |

Depends on what axle you have under your rig and what kind of suspension. If you have a 14 bolt and 4 link you are going to have more clearance issues then a D35 with leafs.
I would say you can get about 2-3 inchs of stretch without running into any major issues. That is with leafs and a standard axle or even a ford 9 inch. If you have a linked rear. Depending on the link mounts you might be able to get an inch or so. If you search around you will find that many people have just moved their tanks up so the lip of the tank sits on the floor. It gives you about 7 more inchs of clearance. Vette just put his tank right in the back.

i would retain the chryco 8.25 and leaves (maybe not the leaves on now, but it would be a leaf suspension).
About the tank, by mounting it just on the lip, do you mean cutting a hole in the floor the size of the tank and setting it on the lip? Thats actually a good idea and would retain a little more room in the back. The only reason I ask is I would hate to take up all that room in the back by putting the tank in there. |

You can always have a custom tank made that would fit under the jeep.

uhh...fuel cell. summit has 16 gallon ones with a sending unit for like 180 bucks.
yea, it isn't as cheap as using the stock tank..but it keeps you from cutting a gigantic ass hole in the floor, and IMO keeps the build looking a lot cleaner |

Yeah, but then I need fuel lines or fittings from AN to whatever metric are probably on the jeep, I lose 2 gallons of fuel capacity, the sending unit says for GM guages, and unless it fits in the same spot as a stock tank but just takes up less room, then I still have to put it all the way inside, which I dont want to do. If its going inside, I would only want it halfway inside like the idea stated above.
It may not work without that, but thats why Im asking. I may be SOL on this. |

I can tell. You have been posting like a mad man today.
Just to give this post a little tech. Take your time with cutting the hole if you go that root. Keep on fitting the tank over and over so it sits on the seam all the way around. Put a little support in the cover you make, so it will hold the tank down firmly. And weld in some studs so you can easily bolt it down and remove it, if need be. And use some rubber where everything mounts. It will squeak like crazy if you don't. That stuff drives me nuts. good luck, post up what you end up doing.

I pretty much just cut the hole all the way to the unibody seam, took the seam and pounded it flat against the unibody and dropped the tank in. I used the old tank straps to hold it in....just drilled holes and bolted it down.

This is the clearance you will gain if you put it in between the frame rails.

You should get a metal tank when you're ready to cut the hole. Then just drop it in and strap it down from the top.
