Porc = pita

I hate these threads and consider myself a VERY reasonable consumer, this is just a hobby to me. But here goes…

Just for your consideration. PORC (performance offroad center) has been very difficult to deal with lately. I ordered a set of front and rear 5.29 Precisions back in late 05, they sent me Yukons. Frustrated I called them and they resisted sending me the precisions so they credited me the difference in price. Well fast forward to this last july the rear ring and pinion fail for no reason other than metallurgy. PORC promptly sends me new Yukons and all is well. Fast forward to this past October, my fronts fail in the same manner (guessing same batch). So I pack them up on October 6th and send them off. I hear nothing. I call PORC on the 13th and they have yet to open the box. Alex takes a look and offers only a 50% warranty. This was irritating because this ring and pinion had only 50 low speed miles on them and they were set up correctly by one of the best in the country. Then Alex tells me that a set of Yukons costs $215+ and therefore I had to fork out $107!!(should be refunded). I pay it because I need the gears ASAP and due to them dragging ass up to now I am behind schedule for a scheduled shakedown run. I expect the gears by the weekend. The weekend comes and goes. I call on Monday, leave an email, 2 messages, and start a thread here on pirate. PORC replys to the thread. Not wanting to publicly confront PORC I PM them. They then call me and I discover that they have not sent the gears until Tuesday. ( the shake down run is Saturday.) This was very frustrating. Then when the gears show up they aren’t the expensive Yukons Ive paid for they are a set of oddly finished gears in a USPS box, wrapped brown paper. I call PORC and miraculously get through. They say they are the house brand. I look on the internet and they cost $119. So they have used my warranty to get me to pay almost full price on their “gears”.

The setup.

Ill let my setup guys chime in on this, but first, one of the ring gear bolts strips out of the ring gear at about 75 ftlbs!!!! (Metallurgy problems??) He stops torquing and continues setup. Nothing is matching up. The pinion is contacting the carrier and still the pattern shows that the pinion must be set much deeper. We look for markings on these gears and find some HAND STAMPED numbers that look altered to appear as if they match. Now The setup guy is trying to get a hold of PORC and they are again impossible to get a hold of and when contacted, incompetent.

Bottom line

I sent my gears in on Oct 6th so that I would have my truck on its feet for a shake down run on November 22nd (missed) and the real run on December 6th. 2 months should be enough, evidently not.

The main reason im posting this is because I am going to be out of town from thanksgiving to 12-2 and only have a few days to get this done and PORC will not respond since Friday, maybe this will wake them up. Also every time I talk to them on the phone they don’t let me say more than 2 words before they cut me off and preach for 10 minutes

I hope this crap has a happy ending

and i wont comment on the situation other than to say, porc has no responsibility to meet any of your wheeling dates. Shipping is not on them, getting it to the shipper is...and if that is unsatisfactory once, dont use them again. They have no obligation to overnight you parts just because you want to go on a ride that weekend; they should however get them on the way as quickly as possible, in whatever method you chose.

I agree, to be clear it is not their responsibility to meet my schedule. which is why i got off my butt and gave them 2 months. They waited a week to inspect my gears and waited another week to send my gears to the shipper.

Randy's is where Yukon comes from. It doesn't matter if it's through a dealer or from them directly.

Do yourself a favor. Pick up the phone, call Brian Anderson at Randy's Ring and Pinion, 866-631-0196, extension 5539. Tell him Tim from Tim's Offroad says hi, explain your situation and frustration with both the product and the dealer you got your stuff from, and order some new stuff.

Brian is a rock crawler and a PBB member, and he will hook you up and not jerk you around.

Randys is a bit overpriced. When you buy a load of stuff it is about $150 more. But like the saying goes, "You get what you pay for". So I think they'd make up for it in customer service. I say take the 50% and run. Both sets went out? 50 low speed miles? Hummm?

I bought a new locker off an auction on ebay from PORC. Now this was an Auction not a seller store, I won the auction a couple weeks later still no locker, I called they stated that they don't have it there and would have to order it from Richmond and I would get a call when they get it. I finally had them cancel the order and I paid more for it locally. I got the same issues with contacting them also. This was a year or so ago and I have not dealt with them since.

Still cant get through or a response.

I have some patients for a slow response, I even have some patients for slow shipping or making a mistake. But the POS gears I got from them was the kicker.

They jerked me around on some gears for Tacoma. It wasn't a HUGE deal, b/c I didn't absolutely have to have the front gears first, but it woulda been nice to. I ordered Yukon and they sent me Precision instead. Amazing how there's always someone reboxing different brands of gears. They sent me the wrong front gear, they sent it for an older style 7.5 front diff as opposed to the clam shell type 7.5 diff for a Tacoma. Kinda put a bad taste in my mouth.

Guys in my club used to go to them all the time. Two or three years ago they were great, but since then everyone who's ordered from them has had problems.

I now have the gears. A good friend was trying to set them up. With .077 pinion shim the pinion is hitting the carrier with the pattern showing it needs to go deeper. It's a stock carrier w/locker. There was also a problem with one of the ring bolts striping the ring at 75ftlbs. he called me for help. I asked what kind of gear, PORC's house brand. I said bring me the whole thing and I'd take a look at it. This was Friday afternoon. I called PORC on Saturday and no one ever answered so I left a message. Monday 1st thing I called and got through and explained what was up and was told their gear guy would be the one that I needed to talk to and that he was on the phone and would call me right back. At 2:00 pm I called back and was told that he had four calls before mine and that he would get back to me soon. At 6:10 pm he called my cell and I missed the call and I tried to call back but they closed at 6. Today I called 9 times and left messages with my shop# and cell# saying that my cell isn't too reliable in the shop call the shop# first. I had a missed call on my cell around 5:15 call back no answer. Closed till Monday.

Ordered a "PORC NP231 SYE" from them a while back. They sent an Advance Adapters SYE instead, and charged my card for the difference. When I called to ask "WTF?" they said they were out of their house brand, and that they tried to call me and had left me a voicemail about it. No voicemails or missed calls on my phone. If they had called and let me know, I would've told them to wait or cancel the order.
