90 4runner 3.4 swap....
Hey guys..
My 3.0 went out on my 4runner so i am swapping in a 3.4L 5vz-fe. My 4runner is a 1990 model, with a 5speed transmission, and had a 3.slow (obviously) I already went and got the motor a few weeks ago. It came out of a 99 tacoma, 4x4, 3.4, AUTOMATIC transmission. I got the motor, ecu, harness, and smog parts.. Now since i have a manual transmission and my 3.4 was out of an auto. I am running into some problems. I have been searching for a 99 tacoma M/T ecu for a while now because i was told it would plug into the auto harness and not be a problem.. Well I CANNOT find one, but This guy Doug at a shop in rancho cordova has been searching through books for me seeing if the ecu's he has would work. He ended up not having an ecu out of a 99 tacoma mt. But he said he could sell me a uncut harness out of a 96 4runner 3.4 manual trans with the ecu for $250. My question is, should i do this? Will the 96 4runner harness work with my 99 tacoma motor? Im not sure of the differences in the motors. I will essential have two harnesses then, so if anything on the 96 harness didn't work on my motor i could always swap the connectors correct? If i buy this will the 96harness and ecu work with this motor.. Smog/CEL/ ETC............ ( i live in California and i will have to go to the smog ref) Please respond to this cause if so i need to order it today so i can get it this week. Thanks. -Mike |

I would keep searching untill you find the correct ECM (m/t)..

Okay and do you know off hand whether or not the 99mt ecu will plug into the 99 auto harness?

i agree, the early 3.4 have a few minor differences.
the later models are a bit more refined and developed to work better with the super charger. it looks to me like the 99-02ish are going to be the same or compatible ecm. the 03-04 have a throttle by wire, so no cable. which means you need more stuff. i am going to see the dealer in a few days for some more wiring research since i cannot find a clean EWD in that year range online to determine if the ECMs do in fact use the same connections or not. i have started putting together a list of compatible parts by factory numbers for someone piecing together the swap like myself.

Okay well now being in commyfornia and i will have to go see a smog ref by december of 2010.. what would be the best route for me to go?
As of now i have the 99 tacoma motor out of an auto, the ecu and all the smog stuff. So ill pass on the 96 4runner parts.. Nobody i have found has the 99 tacoma 4wd v6 M/T ecu. This guy Doug who has been busting his ass says he has a 99 tacoma v6 M/T ecu, but it is from a 2wd.. Would that work with the connections? I just wouldn't have the 4wd light right? Would that work in CA smog?? Would the motor run right? And would it plug into the auto harness? Thanks for everyone's help.. |

I dont know on the 4x4's but we swapped a manual trans into a 97 3.4 5 lug ex cab tacoma and had a never ending check engine light (AT codes). We got another ECU out of a 97 3.4 MT truck and the connectors were different. We would have had to change the whole fucking harness (dash too IIRC). Call Johnathon at Rachno Toyota Trucks. He seems to really know his shit about these motors.

I believe that it will plug in to the ECM but the pins will probably be different things. Since your in ca i wouldn't chance it, Get the right stuff (4wd computer) i know it's a pita to find all the stuff but it's even worse when you go the the ref and he declines it because of something dumb. I have abuddy that did a 3rz in a 85 and the ref was a dickface and said he had to have the ORIGINAL exhaust off of the truck that the engine came out of

Just got off the phone with them..
Johnathon no longer works there, and the guy that i talked with told me that the Motor out of an auto vehicle WOULD NOT work and everything was different. I frankly remember john telling me ( when i spoke with him a while ago) That the 3.4 would work regardless of which trans vehicle it came out of. I have spoken with other guys online and they have gotten a 3.4L motor out of an auto to work with their rig even though it was a manual. My problem is i am having problems with the ecu/harness situation and i need a step in the right direction. Every Wrecking yard i have called so far has told me they either will not sell me the 99 M/T ecu because they don't have one or because it goes with their swap kit that they want $2500 for.... |

Okay yes this wrecking company has 2wd 1999 tacoma v6 m/t ecus..
The part number he gave me was 89661-34160 for the 2wd 99 tacoma computer.. the part number off the 99 tacoma 4wd at ecu that i have is 89661-04460 ![]() Idk where to look but im going to try to search around and see if both of these ecus have the same plug connections... ALSO if anyone knows for certain if the 2wd ecu will work for now if i can get one, will you let me know? Thanks -Mike |

www.car-part.com for the ECU.
I would not pay more than 125 shipped for one. Here are the ECU connectors on the 1996 5VZ-FE and 2-3RZ-FE engines. As you can see, the 5VZ plugs are different between the MT and AT. Whereas the 2RZ-3RZ are are same except for the extra E6 connector. I don't know if the connectors on the later model years are the same between the AT and MT. Buy an EWD for that year engine and you'll find if you need a new harness/ECU or not. ![]()

Okay this is what i am working with from TIS:
This is all saved from a 99 TACOMA V6 EWD: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() That is what i have under the Engine control EWD.. All i have at the moment. Isn't that all there is???+ So judging from that does that mean they would be interchangeable?? Last edited by 904_runner; 03-17-2009 at 07:58 PM. |

[quote=jmsdad;9572566]www.car-part.com for the ECU.
There are 42 on this web site right now for a 1999 tacoma V6 4x4 manual trans ecu. Great source tool!

check the harness you have to see if the connectors are the same as the TIS printout.
also, go over to yotatech and check out the engine swap section. a couple of guys have detailed write-ups over there. |

And ive been on yotatech a while now but haven't read anything about this particular ecu swap.. Im trying to find if this ecu from a 2wd will work now, because i can get it, to at least have my truck running ASAP.. One question for you guys is if i were to stick with the auto ecu for now it wouldn't run correctly right? I was wondering if there was a way to trick the computer into thinking it was in neutral so i could run this ecu... I just need to get my truck back on the road asap. What got me thinking this, is what happens when the guys do an auto trans to manual trans conversion.. Don't they have to mess with the neutral safty switch or something like that? |

Bump...
Has anyone done an auto to manual trans conversion on a tacoma or 4runner? If so what did you do with the ecu to make it run correctly? |

okay well ive been working with the EWD's for this swap.. (trying to at least)
And what i think ive came up with is on the "ELECTRONICALLY CONTROLLED TRANSMISSION AND A/T INDICATOR" wiring diagram. It shows that prongs 14d and 13d relate to the PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SW.. This is part of E8(d) Plug on the ecu.. SO im thinking if i jump spots 13d and 14d on the connector together it would allow the ecu to think that the auto trans(which i don't have) Is in neutral. IF this is true would my truck run properly like this? |

yes from what have read and talked about with a guy on Marlin crawler's forum this is true about the park and neutral you can just splice them together and this tells the computer that the truck is in park/neutral allowing the ECM to engage the starter
Now this guy ran his auto ECM with a manual and did it sucessfully by using a series of resistors to tell the ECM that the tranny was shifting properly As far as the truck running right i wouldn't see any reason it wouldn't other than a bunch of codes poping up that is interesting that the plugs are the same from auto to manual because the FSM I saw for a 99 taco showed them being different???? if my memory serves me correct |

Dont forget about the smog. The referee has made me do some really stupid things, especially when swapping in a later model engine with fewer smog components. You can call BAR and ask for the refs number. I would talk to them to get an idea of what they are going to do to you.
